What Makes Up The Anchor Sound?

 

We get this question daily.  Ultimately, our drums are going to sound like the drummer that owns them.  We build all of our drums with the same basic foundational pieces and elements.  But, once they reach the hands of someone else it will be up to their tastes, head choice, and tuning to decide how that drum will sound.  We build our drums to sound way bigger than they look.  We also use edges that really bring out the fullest tone and sound of the shell.  It is better to start with a lower pitched drum, since you can always tune up if needed.  But, you can't always tune down a higher pitched drum with a sharper edge.  When you do, you get that dead, flabby, plastic sound.  We build with edges that allow for very low tuning and also sound great when cranked up.  

 

Toms Edges & Shells

 

 

We use two main edge styles on our toms and kicks.  Our standard edge is a rounded edge with a slight peak.  This gives a very warm, fulle tone, yet projects well and has a big presence.  Our other edge is the full rounded edge for those who want the most head to shell contact.  Big, meaty, with a nice vintage tone that still cuts through for modern music.    

 

Kick Edges & Shells

 

Our standard edge on kick drums is a full rounded edge.  Big, meaty, and massive.   Easy to tone down for lower volume sessions, or play wide open and really let the audience feel the low end.  

 

 

Snare Edges & Shells

 

For snares we use a few different options depending on what the drummer needs.  Standard 45 inner with a slight hand sanded roundover outer.  This gives a nice clean bite, great cut, general all around solid tone.  We also do full rounded for meaty old school tones and 30 inner cut with roundover outer for a classic snare sound.  We occasionally do two different styles for top and bottom to create some new and unique tones.  Like using a full rounded top with a modern 45 bottom.  Fat tone with great sensitivity.  So, some great options to meet all styles of music.
